30-year cost comparison ยท electricity vs. solar investment

Assumptions Solar system is sized for a 100% energy offset โ€” the calculations below assume your solar system offsets this percentage of your electricity consumption.
๐Ÿ“‹ What does "100% Offset" mean?

In Alberta (2026), your electricity bill is made up of more than just the energy you consume. A 100% offset means your solar system is sized to generate enough electricity over the course of a year to cover your total bill โ€” including:

  • Energy charges โ€” the actual cost of electricity consumed (regulated or market rate)
  • Transmission charges โ€” fees for moving power across Alberta's high-voltage grid
  • Distribution charges โ€” costs for delivering power through local lines to your home
  • Administration & rider fees โ€” fixed monthly fees, rate rider adjustments, and other utility charges

Under Alberta's Micro-Generation Regulation, excess solar energy exported to the grid earns credits that offset these costs, effectively reducing your net bill to zero across a 12-month period when properly sized.
